Episode Summary
In this episode of The Digital Recruiter Podcast, we sit down with Joshua Jones, Director of Content Marketing & Development at ERE, to talk about what the best talent acquisition leaders are doing to stay ahead—and why in-person learning and real community still matter in a digital-first world.
Joshua shares his personal journey from recruiting in the property management and construction industries to building one of the most engaged learning platforms in the TA space through ERE and SourceCon. He walks us through his “aha” moment as a recruiter—how a late-night breakthrough with Texas school bond funding helped him fill roles no one else could—and what that taught him about sourcing, urgency, and the power of curiosity in recruiting.
We also dive deep into the upcoming ERE Recruiting Innovation Summit in Las Vegas (April 29-30), where Joshua and his team are bringing together forward-thinking recruiters, TA leaders, and employer brand pros from the world’s top companies. We talk about what makes this event different: no fluff, no pay-to-play keynotes, and a BS-free environment focused on real learning, tactical innovation, and relationship building.
Joshua emphasizes how today’s best recruiters are both artists and operators—and why the best ROI doesn't come from tech stacks alone, but from sharpening your skills, expanding your network, and staying adaptable. From the value of sourcing communities to lessons learned building content that actually drives change, this conversation is a masterclass in what it takes to succeed in recruiting today.
If you’re serious about elevating your recruiting career, staying future-ready, and learning from the best minds in the industry—this episode is a must-listen. Whether you’re agency, in-house, or somewhere in between, there’s something here for you.
Joshua’s Bio
Great recruiting doesn’t happen in a vacuum. The best talent acquisition leaders are always learning, adapting, and connecting with others who push them to innovate and think differently.
That’s exactly what we create at ERE - an engaged, solutions-driven community for recruiters, sourcers, and employer branding experts who want to stay ahead of the curve.
As the Director of Content Marketing & Development, I create spaces where top talent acquisition professionals connect - whether through conferences, webinars, or thought leadership events. These go beyond networking. They foster meaningful conversations, real learning, and actionable strategies that drive impact.
I collaborate with companies and recruiting teams that prioritize growth and development while also engaging directly with practitioners - senior recruiters, sourcers, and TA operations leaders - who seek fresh strategies to stay ahead in an evolving hiring landscape.
This year, ERE’s flagship event in Las Vegas on April 29th and 30th is bringing together top TA professionals from Fortune 500 and growing SMBs. If you want to learn from the best, challenge outdated practices, and walk away with actionable insights, this is where you need to be.

#56- Poker Pro, Media Mogul, Recruiter: Joe Sebok Always goes All In
Friday Jan 24, 2025
Friday Jan 24, 2025
Episode Summary
In this episode of the Digital Recruiter Podcast, Clark Willcox sits down with former professional poker player turned recruiter, Joe Sebok, to talk about his wild career journey. Joe was part of the poker boom in the 2000s, playing on televised World Series of Poker tables, running his own media company, and even building an early social media platform for poker pros. But when the online poker industry collapsed in 2011, he had to reinvent himself—eventually landing in the world of recruiting, where he’s now building a thriving business.
Joe shares the lessons he’s learned from poker that apply directly to recruiting and business: reading people, managing risk, and knowing when to go all-in. He talks about the power of reinvention, why so many recruiters fail because they avoid doing the actual work, and how leaning into your strengths can give you a real competitive advantage. He also opens up about navigating public scrutiny, handling high-pressure situations, and overcoming mental blocks that hold people back from success.
If you’ve ever felt stuck in your career, doubted your next move, or struggled to stand out in a crowded market, this episode is packed with insights on mindset, personal branding, and making strategic bets on yourself. Don’t miss this one!
Joe’s Bio
After beginning his career as a professional poker player in 2005, winning several titles and competing in both the World Series of Poker and World Poker Tour, Sebok ceased playing full-time in 2009 to make his shift into media and business. He did so effectively, helping spearhead poker’s first televised media reporting program, as well as several of poker’s most popular radio programs across the globe.
Sebok joined the recruiting and talent acquisition ranks in 2015 and won awards while at the largest creative recruiting agency in North America before transitioning to work in-house and build several entire teams from scratch. His additional experience in marketing, sales, and operations further strengthens his robust proficiency in understanding clients’ open positions and what is required to staff them both effectively and expeditiously.

Evolve our Recruiting Game
Recruiting is a grind. Anyone that tells you differently is lying (or selling you lead gen services.)
The lack of formal sales & recruiting training in our industry is a problem. A great recruiter decides to launch their firm, brings on a few clients, but then gets stuck hiring new team members, finding new clients, & evaluating what works and doesn't.
There’s a reason most agencies can’t scale. There’s never a time to step back and evaluate what works, what doesn’t. Next thing you know, you've spent thousands on tools that no one is really leveraging correctly or using at all.
You want to do it differently than other agencies, but are stuck in the day-to-day of qualifying reqs, chasing feedback, & wondering how to get the most out of your team.
Enter the DIGITAL RCRUITER.
After 5 years at Aerotek & 2 years booking thousands of sales calls for clients via LinkedIn, from influencers with 700,000 followers to founders with less than 100” connections, I steered the Digital Recruiter in 2021.
Since then, I have worked with 150+ recruiters & agency owners on their recruiting process & LinkedIn outreach + content leading to millions in additional placements.
Now, I work exclusively with recruiting owners and leadership teams that have proven they can sell, but want to take the next step.
By reverse engineering where you want to go together, and utilizing our holistic approach to recruiting, merging old school fundamentals with a digital presence is how we get there together.
If you work with a sense of urgency and humility and have a good time working hard, we likely will get along well.
Want to see how we can work together?
